Three tales. One evening of wonder.
Balete Drive: Inspired by the myth of La Llorona. Carolina, a student studying abroad, ignores a warning and finds herself in danger.
For Such a Time as This: Based on the story of the Golemn of Prauge from Yiddish folklore. Hadassah, a girl raised in Judaism, in a modern world full of competing voices turns to her deceased father for answers as to how to find peace in the tumultuous world around her.
The Tell-Tale Heart: An adaptation of Edgar Allen Poe’s chilling tale. Two sisters, both trained in ballet. One jealous of the other. Why can’t Eliza’s sister and the police officer in her home seem to hear or see her?
This production was presented in October 2020 by the Brigham Young University (BYU) Department of Theater & Media Arts (TMA) on the Pardoe Stage in the Harris Fine Arts Center (HFAC). This production utilized the Pepper’s Ghost effect due to distancing limitations enforced at the time caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Because of distancing protocols set by the department and local health authorities, we were only allowed to have one actor physically onstage at any given time.
As such each of the pieces in this show features three actors, one physically on stage and the other two performing remotely in booths erected in a different part of the building where they were recorded and projected onto the Pardoe Stage using the Pepper’s Ghost Effect. This created a small challenge for audio, as it meant that we had to find a way to get the best possible sound from one part of the building to the other. This ended up with a Dante line being ran from “Audio HQ” in the Pardoe, down through the ceiling into the audio booth in the Margettes Theater where our remote HQ was.
As an assistant sound designer on this production I was tasked with generating a portion of the technical paperwork for this production, examples of which you can see attached below.
I also worked as the Front of House Engineer/A2 on this production. My responsibilities extended to maintaining all of the equipment that was part of the in house system, mixing the show for those in house during production, and maintaining all equipment.
